Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders – Fight Preview
Finally, the fight is upon us! The matchup that has the whole boxing world licking their has arrived with the P4P king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez looking to unify the division against arguably his toughest opponent in years, Billy Joe Saunders.
The Mexican loves to fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend and has managed to sell 70,000 tickets at the AT&T Arena in Texas, a record attendance since the pandemic in America. Saunders will not let the thousands of Canelo fans impact his performance, with Charlie Duffield (BJS’s training partner) explaining that, “it will definitely add more fuel to the fire. Billy will shine no matter what”. Duffield also spoke on BJS’s great shape, claiming that he is in “the best physical and mental shape for a fight he’s ever been in”.
Fight week has been entertaining as expected, with BJS’s camp threatening to leave America at the start of the week amidst a dispute over the size of the ring. That has now been resolved, and we have a mega fight to look forward to! Also on the card, another Mexican ‘Elwin Soto’ defends his WBO junior flyweight title against legendary Japanese boxer Katsunari Takayama. An intriguing bout takes place in the Super Welterweight division, as Kieron Conway takes on the Frenchman Souleymane Cissokho for the WBO Inter-Continental Title.
Canelo is seen as the greatest boxer in the sport right now and there is no debate that BJS will have to be on top form to come out with a result, but there is a real feeling of belief around the boxing community that BJS’s style is the way that Canelo will be beat which makes Saturday’s encounter all the more interesting. Will Billy mark the first loss on Canelo’s record since the Mayweather bout 8 years ago? The Fans’ Corner lads and Charlie Duffield have their say:
Fred – I can’t wait for this fight! Since that Mayweather loss, Canelo has gone from strength to strength and currently looks a machine every time he enters the ring. BJS on the other hand always looks like he has the ability but doesn’t always show it, however when he does it’s usually in the big fights. I expect BJS to put in an exquisite performance, but I can’t see him doing enough to get the scorecards for him and I see Canelo getting the decision after 12 rounds.
Harry - I’m going Saunders decision, he looks to be in the best shape of his career. I believe he will use the ring space to his advantage. He needs to keep away from canelo’s traps and use his jab well and can see him doing this. Also think the screaming 70,000 will spur him on. Excited for this one. My prediction for fight of the year!
Duffield – I think a Billy win on points, as long as the judges don’t rob him!
Big thanks to Charlie for his input on this piece!
