Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton signs a one-year deal with Mercedes for the 2021 season
Lewis Hamilton has certainly kept everyone waiting for the recent development in his F1 career. The Formula One community had been left unsure at the end of last season as to whether Lewis Hamilton would return but after delays in contract talks, it was finally announced today that Lewis would be returning to the grid for the upcoming season.
There is no denying as to what will be both Lewis Hamilton’s and Mercedes main target for this upcoming season. Lewis is chasing his eighth world championship title, something no one else has achieved in Formula One history and Mercedes will be looking to be constructor champions for their eighth year in a row.
The new agreement has targeted the lack of diversity within Formula One an important topic that Hamilton was extremely vocal about last season. The contract includes a commitment to creating a joint charitable foundation to benefit kids from diverse backgrounds.
On the commitment, Lewis vocalised his gratitude to Mercedes, “I’m equally determined to continue the journey we started to make motorsport more diverse for future generations and I am grateful that Mercedes has been extremely supportive of my call to address this issue”.
It’s worth pointing out that all of Valtteri Bottas, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s contracts expire at the end of the 2021 season causing fans to speculate about George Russell’s future. Will he renew at Williams or start fresh at Mercedes after his promising spell when replacing Lewis Hamilton last season while he fought COVID-19?
With many teams not producing last season, it gave Mercedes what many people called a ‘free run’. However, Ferrari have a new driver in Carlos Sainz and Red Bull replaced Alex Albon with Sergio Perez and with some promising drivers in the pack, it goes without saying that there will be challenges along the way.
What are your predictions for the upcoming season? Do you think George Russell deserves a seat at Mercedes for 2022?
