The Fans Corner: Canelo vs Yildirim Fight Preview
After once again an amazing weekend of boxing, we take a look into this Saturday’s Matchroom card across the Atlantic, as P4P king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez takes on Turkish super-middleweight Avni ‘Mr Robot” Yildirim for the WBA and WBC super-middleweight titles at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. The card is stacked with an amazing undercard, as WBC king Julio Cesar Martinez takes on Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo in a clash for the WBC flyweight crown. Many of boxing’s finest prospects also feature on the card such as unbeaten American Diego Pacheco (10-0) and Marc Castro (1-0) who are looking to continue their climb to the top. Canelo, a fighter who needs no introduction to the world of boxing after what he has accomplished so far in his hall of fame worthy career. He carries with him a record of 52 wins with 1 loss and 2 draws, knocking out 36 of his opponents along the way. His most recent victory coming way of a unanimous decision, as he took care of Liverpudlian Callum ‘Mundo’ Smith and put the first loss on Smith’s record as a pro. On the flip side, Anvi Yildirim holds a record of 21 wins with 2 loses including a loss to Brit Chris Eubank Jr. He has knocked out just over 50% of his opponents, so he clearly brings power to the table. In Yildirim’s last bout it wasn’t good news, after a 7th round accidental head clash caused a cut on the right eye of his opponent Anthony Dirrell, this then forced referee Mark Nelson to go the score cards where Dirrell was victorious, so Yildirim will be looking to bounce back and shock the world with a win over the current P4P King. With Canelo coming out victorious, promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that a long awaited bout with Billy Joe Saunders is the inevitable and is looking to announce the fight after Canelo’s battle this Saturday. The rumoured date is set to be either ‘May 1’ or ‘May 8’ and will take place at the Raiders Stadium in Las Vegas.
Our Canelo vs Saunders fight preview is already up on our website so be sure to have a read of that!
Harry’s prediction: Can I see an upset? Absolutely not. I really can’t see a way that Yildirim can get to Canelo and become victorious because he’s already shown his weakness’ with losses to Chris Eubank Jr and Anthony Dirrell and they are no-where near the same calibre as Canelo. But we can’t ever rule a fighter out can we? But I think Canelo will wear Yildirm down with countless body shots whilst chasing down a wounded and desperate Yildirim around the ring. I think Canelo will get the job done relatively early via a 4th round KO.
Fred's Prediction: Everyone knows that this fight is just a mandatory bout for Canelo and he'll have his eyes on a bout with Billy Joe Saunders more than this. However, we've seen boxers look beyond their current opponent and get caught when they suffer a shock loss, Joshua and Warrington being major examples. Canelo's been in this position before though and knows how the fight game works so it should still plan out as everyone expects. Canelo 5th round for me.
