Warrington vs Lara 2 Preview: Can Warrington avenge his only defeat?
Last February one of the biggest upsets in British boxing happened, when Mexico’s Mauricio Lara stopped Josh Warrington in the 9th round to snatch away Warrington’s unbeaten record. Going into the first fight boxing fans and experts didn’t give Lara a chance as it was unimaginable to see someone as unheard of as Lara to outshine a world class fighter in Josh Warrington. This only then fired the Mexican up to put on the best performance of his life putting Warrington down in the 4th and the 9th causing the stoppage.
We now look on now to the rematch, which is scheduled to take place on 4th September in Warrington’s home town of Leeds where he looks to put things straight against Lara. The card boasts talent from top to bottom with Katie Taylor defending her undisputed lightweight crown against America’s Jennifer Han. Conor Benn’s rescheduled bout against Adrian Granados and Jovanni Straffon makes his first IBO lightweight world title defence against Maxi Hughes. Unbeaten prospect Hopey Price is also in action against Zahid Hussain in a all British showdown. Leeds favourite Jack Bateson and Australia’s Ebanie Bridges also look to mark up a win on their record come 4th September.
From my perspective I see this as a huge fight for Warrington. If he looses it could be curtains for him on the world stage but if he does dismantle Lara, it then rockets him back in contention for those world title scraps. It’s a must win for Josh and personally I think he will get the job done and will use his speed and exquisite footwork to stop Lara in the later rounds. Last time around I felt there was a lot of ring rust for Warrington as he was out of the ring for well over a year prior to the first fight. However, you can’t take anything away from Lara and as I’ve said before you can’t write off any fighter. It would not surprise me if Lara shocks us again and leaves Warrington considering retirement. Either way we know it will be a war as we have witnessed what both fighters are capable off!
